Marcela Cantú Serrano
Besos Con Sal Productions, LLC. Writer-Director
California
I am a writer-director based in Los Angeles, CA. Born and raised in Mexico, I graduated from Boston University in 2016 with a degree in Film & Television and Gender Studies and have since worked as an executive assistant to several writers, producers, and directors on feature films such as Newness (2017), Pursued (2018), and The Addams Family (2019).
After years of exclusively dedicating myself to the craft of screenwriting, I decided to venture into the world of directing after completing the short screenplay for Ribbons, a story that was inspired by a personal experience not unlike my protagonist, Lucy’s. I am thrilled to breathe new life into a tender but bittersweet memory and have found a sense of poetic justice filming at my Alma Mater in Brownsville, TX — the place where it all began.
My aim is to tell stories that find hope and beauty at the intersection of class and gender differences and that appeal to a wide range of audiences, specifically catering to those who have been historically underserved. At the same time, my love for romantic comedies and coming-of-age films greatly influenced Ribbons, which I consider an homage to both.
