Michael Barnett is an Emmy Award winning filmmaker focused on telling human stories of culture and social justice. His films have premiered at Sundance and Tribeca and have won awards at over 40 festivals around the globe. Michael has also created award winning commercials, music videos, and directed television for HBO, Nat Geo, Discovery, BBC, etc. Michael’s first full length film, “Superheroes” – a chronicle of the real-life super hero community – and winner of over a dozen film festivals, was distributed by HBO Documentary Films and was nominated for multiple Emmys. In 2013 Michael produced, “Gore Vidal: The United States of Amnesia,” a documentary about the last lion of American liberalism. The film premiered at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival to rave reviews and was released theatrically by IFC and Sundance Selects. In 2015 Michael directed "Becoming Bulletproof", an intimate story of a group of filmmakers living with disability and winner of over 25 Best Doc/Grand Jury/Audience Award prizes at film festivals around the globe. “Becoming Bulletproof” premiered on Showtime. Michael then partnered with Netflix Originals for "The Mars Generation" an in-depth documentary about the politics, philosophy and technology of our space industry. “The Mars Generation” premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival as one of the opening night films and was nominated for Best Science and Technology documentary at the 2018 Emmys. Michael also travels the world extensively as a cultural diplomat with the US State Dept and the American Film Showcase. Michael is the founder of SuperFilms!, a Los Angeles based, award winning, full service production company, focused on telling extraordinary stories across all media platforms. Michael is currently in production on two new films. “Changing the Game” a film about transgender high school athletes, and “Jihad Rehab” a film about a Saudi Arabian rehab facility for reforming jihadists.
