Assembled from amateur footage collected over two decades, the documentary “17 Blocks” can be difficult and uncomfortable to watch. Combined with the intimate way it invites the viewer into the world of the Sanford family, that is where it gets its power. As it portrays addiction, instability, and violence — punctuated by glimmers of hope — the audience is given a front-row perspective into a home 17 blocks from the U.S. Capitol, in a community a world apart from its neighbor. — Charlie Bice
