Sixteen years after the Civil Rights Act was passed, public servants worked to dismantle the stigma of racial violence while pursuing unabridged equality in Birmingham, Ala. “Iron Grit” focuses on two pivotal characters: Richard Arrington and Bonita Carter. The tragedy surrounding Carter’s 1979 homicide inspired change across city government. Complete with interviews and raw footage, the documentary walks the audience through hardship and survival, showing how to put the pieces of a broken city back together. — Ashley B. Little
